Zhou Sicheng a prominent Chinese linguist was born in Hunan Province in 1905. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1926 and then went to study abroad in the United States obtaining his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1932. Upon returning to China Zhou Sicheng became a professor at Tsinghua University and later at Peking University.
As a linguist Zhou Sicheng made significant contributions to the studies of phonology dialectology and Chinese historical linguistics. He is best known for his work in establishing a system of Romanization for Chinese characters known as the "Gwoyeu Romatzyh" system. This system which uses a combination of letters and tone marks to represent Chinese sounds was intended to replace the existing Wade-Giles system and was adopted by the Chinese government in 1958.
Zhou Sicheng was also an important figure in the movement to promote the use of the Chinese language in science and technology. He believed that the Chinese language was capable of expressing modern concepts and terminology and advocated for the creation of new technical terms in Chinese.
