The Chart Above shows the proportion of different kinds of waste produced by Wuhan residents in the year 2018. It can be seen from the chart that the majority of the waste consists of food waste which accounts for 51.7% of the total amount followed by other wastes which make up 19.1%. The proportion of hazardous waste and recyclable waste are both 9.2%.
The chart indicates that the city still has a long way to go in terms of waste reduction and management. As we all know food waste can be turned into compost through proper treatment which can not only reduce the amount of waste but also serve as an excellent source of organic fertilizer for agriculture. By contrast hazardous waste poses a severe threat to the environment and human health calling for stricter regulations and more comprehensive measures to control the sources.
