Passage 1

For the first time in history renewable energy made up the majority of new power generation added to the worldwide grid last year according to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA). The report states that the world added 157 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity in 2017 compared with 70 gigawatts for fossil fuel generation.

The report also shows that solar power was the fastest-growing source of new energy with 98 gigawatts of new capacity added. China was the biggest installer of solar panels accounting for nearly 55% of global installations.

Despite the progress in renewable energy the report highlights that the world is still falling short of its climate targets. The IEA warns that governments need to take more action to meet the goals set in the Paris Climate Agreement.

In recent years more and more high school students have been choosing to study abroad. According to a report by China’s Ministry of Education over 540000 students left China to study abroad in 2017 an increase of 11.7% from the previous year.

The USA is still the most popular destination for Chinese students with over 350000 students choosing to study there last year. The UK is the second most popular destination followed by Australia Canada and Japan.

Many students choose to study abroad in order to improve their language skills gain international experience and increase their job prospects. However studying abroad can also be very expensive and many students have to take out large loans in order to fund their studies.
