The overall obesity rate is 16.4% indicating that there are approximately 120 million obese people in China. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obesity as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. BMI is a measure of weight relative to height and a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy.
As China has undergone rapid ization and modernization in recent years people's lifestyles have changed dramatically. They work in offices and rely heavily on electronic devices and their daily physical activity level has dropped significantly. Meanwhile the Western diet which is high in calories fat and sugar has become increasingly popular in China replacing the traditional Chinese diet which is low in calories and fat but high in complex carbohydrates.
Obesity is a serious public health concern because it is linked to a range of chronic diseases such as diabetes cardiovascular disease hypertension and cancer. Given the aging population in China and the prevalence of chronic diseases obesity is a problem that cannot be neglected.
To tackle this problem the following measures can be taken. First it is necessary to educate the public about the importance of healthy eating and active living. Schools and community organizations can organize nutrition and physical education programs for children and adults. Second the government should regulate the food industry by implementing laws to reduce the level of sugar fat and salt in foods and implement a nutrient labeling scheme. Third planning should be designed to encourage walking and biking by providing more green spaces and bike lanes. Fourth workplaces should provide wellness programs to encourage employees to exercise regularly and eat healthily. Finally individuals should be encouraged to take responsibility for their own health by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
In conclusion obesity is an issue in China that requires urgent attention. s industries schools and individuals can work together to promote healthy eating and active living and prevent obesity. It is essential to create a society where being healthy is the norm.
